On April 16th, 2024, Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford urged other provinces to eliminate barriers to the flow of goods and labor within Canada, presenting it as a buffer against U.S. tariffs. Ontario has signed agreements with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, in order to liberalize interprovincial trade and support business operating across provincial lines.
New legislation under review would fully remove existing exceptions to internal free trade – including permitting direct-to-consumer alcohol sales between provinces.
