Scotch sales fell by £1.1bn ($1.55bn) during 2020, as its exports hit a decade low. The coronavirus pandemic accounted for much of the shortfall, but punitive 25% tariffs imposed on single malts by the Trump administration in late 2019, as well as the cost of paperwork and border checks for exports to the European Union due to Brexit have caused the industry to struggle. This article suggests that support for a second referendum on Scottish independence may grow if the UK government does not resolve export issues for Scotch whisky with the European Union and United States. |
