Japan’s National Tax Agency (NTA) has proposed nine new geographical indications (GIs) for alcohol beverages from the United Kingdom, including two types of wine, three ciders, three perrys, and one beer.
The NTA will accept public comments on the proposal through 16 January 2023. The proposal builds on the UK-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, which recognised GIs for Scotch Whisky, UK-produced Irish Cream, and UK-produced Irish Whisk(e)y.
The agency also approved ten more GIs for UK-alcohol beverages in 2021.
