UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson hopes to reach a free trade agreement with India by November 2022, and the agreement reportedly may include whisky as part of the deal. At present, Scotch whisky – with a reported 150% tariff on liquor entering India – accounts for only 2% of the whisky market in India. Economists indicate that the Prime Minister’s timeline may be ambitious, however, and the Scotch Whisky Association reportedly has urged an "early harvest deal," calling for whisky tariffs to be dropped ahead of a full deal to generate positive headlines.
