A gene study – “Two domestications for grapes: Glacial cycles and wild adaptations shaped grape domestication and the rise of wine” – published in the journal Science concludes that humans began farming hermaphroditic grapevines approximately 11,000 years ago.
They believe domestication occurred at nearly the same time in the Caucasus region, where grapevines were selected for winemaking, and in western Asia, where grapevines were first selected to develop table grapes.
