The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) warns that the largest alcohol tax increases in nearly fifty years will cripple the UK wine sector, noting that fortified wines will be damaged most. Port will be subjected to a 44% duty increase, and the price of most fortified wines will increase by about £1.50 per bottle, including duty and VAT. The new taxes on still wine will not take effect for 18 months, but the tax increases on fortified wines will take effect immediately on 01 August 2023.
